There are plenty of snowshoes on the market. For a newbie it might be a bit difficult to tell the difference other than the price. Most snowshoes are quite small to be used on deep and untouched snow. On the trails that have been previously walked you are sometimes better off with your normal shoes, because what happens on the trails that are daily used, the snow compresses and packs hard and even becomes icy. But when you really want to go off the track to virgin snow you need big enough rackets to support your weight. The bigger the rackets the better they hold you on top of the snow. With inadequate snowshoes you'll sink deep in the snow and the walking gets tough.
